Very shortly after the release of Oldschool RuneScape, there came a wave of “custom” third-party game clients. Each of these clients had their own special set of benefits and tools that ultimately made parts of the game easier.
Being that they are third-party and are not officially endorsed by the game developers, Jagex, many players are skeptical of malicious code in these unofficial clients. This skepticism is fair, as most of these clients were developed by companies who previously made botting software.
So, what sets RuneLite apart from other clients, and is RuneLite safe to use?
RuneLite Is Safe
Other third-party clients, such as OSBuddy, are developed privately. This means that unless you are given access, you cannot view the client’s source code. This goes for other third-party clients too, except RuneLite!
RuneLite was developed to be an open source client, which allows the entire community to contribute to its growth. This level of transparency is the main factor in being able to determine with absolute certainty that RuneLite is safe. Anyone can open the GitHub page and see exactly what is happening within the entire program.
Upon its release, it was almost completely shut down by Jagex themselves. Due to an enormous community backlash, Jagex redacted their claims and allowed RuneLite to flourish into what is the best OSRS third-party client today. In fact, over 1/4th of the entire community uses this client to play the game!
With that factor in mind, it’s safe to say that you do not run the risk of account bans for using the RuneLite client. However, this doesn’t mean that RuneLite does not have limitations put in place by Jagex.
Everyone is able to contribute to the development of RuneLite. This opens doors for tons of great minds to come together and create incredible features to improve your OSRS experience. Sometimes, though, great minds can overstep their bounds!
In the past, certain RuneLite plugins have been reviewed, and were requested for removal by either Jagex or the main client developers. Some plugins that have been created made things a little too easy, or even did things for you automatically.
Will you get banned for using plugins that may be too overpowered? The short answer is: No. As long as you stick to the plugins provided by the RuneLite client upon installation, you will not face any account issues.
Creating your own plugins to do malicious things or break the game’s rules is another story.
